Lukes Session (22nd November)

In this session, we continued on our analysis of Documentaries, we recapped on what we did last week mainly for people who were off filming.

Characteristics of a Documentary

A Genre of Filmmaking which has a series of identifiable characteristics

Super Size Me (a Film of Epic Proportions) was controversial when it was released due to the obesity epidemic in America.

Later on, we watched a clip of Super Size Me that had been cut from the original Documentary, which was called “The Decomposition of McDonalds Burgers and Fries” and all I can say is that it was rather disturbing, there were Several Burgers (including a Royale with Cheese from Pulp Fiction) that rotted so badly that they were thrown out after 10 weeks.

What makes a good Documentary?
Some Documentaries can be really engaging, some can be hard to watch, some can feel slow and somewhat boring , so what makes a good Documentary?

Tell a Story- keep to the chosen topic of your documentary, this is what has drawn your audience in, try not to go off on tangents

Make us Care- you should draw viewers into the story and make them invested in the outcome of the piece

Keep it Short- Every frame of the film should be about telling a story and advancing it forward. You need to be ruthless in your editing. If a scene drags on, cut it or risk. Losing the interest of your audience.

The 6 types of documentaries

Poetic (Sans Soleil)
a Poetic Documentary is a type of Documentary that tends towards subjective interpretations of its subjects.

Expository (Voice of God)
Expository Documentaries are types of Documentaries that speak directly to the viewer.

Observational (Children Underground)
Observational documentaries are Documentaries that present footage of real life as it unfolds instead of interviews and voice-over narration

Participatory (Louis Theroux Documentaries)
A Participatory Documentary is the type of documentary that has an inclusive and collaborative process.

Reflexive (Man with a Movie Camera)
Reflexive Documentaries promote truth along with calling the viewers attention to the filmmaking process

Performative (David Attenborough Documentaries)
The Performative Documentary is the exact opposite of an Observational Documentary, a performative documentary emphasises a filmmaker's own involvement or connection to the Documentary.
