Best Batman Game yet?
In 2016,
Telltale games announced their next project, Telltale at the time was known for
reimagining franchises like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, but their
next project was exciting for comic book fans, on 19th July of that
year, Telltale released a world premiere trailer for their next franchise
reimagining, Batman: A Telltale Games Series.
Telltale
Games is known for their unique style when it comes to video games, the big
part of Telltale’s style is the ability for the player to influence the game
through in-game choices that can change the story and affect the episodes that
come after it. Telltale releases their games in an episodic structure, like a television
drama or show in general (maybe not a Documentary) the episode ends on a cliff-hanger
that ties into the next episode of the show, Doctor who for example uses this
with their two-parter episodes, it takes two episodes to resolve the problem,
with the Telltale Games however the story carries through 5 episodes.
Batman: The
Telltale series comes with many consequential in-game choices that affect the
rest of the game, at the beginning of each episode, a message pops up saying “the
story adapts to the choices you make, the story is tailored by how you play,”
this implies to the player that they are in control of how the story goes,
Telltale’s games are like choose your own adventure books, similar to the game,
you are in control of the story.
At the end
of each episode, there will be a big choice that affects the rest of the series
and episodes that come after, for example one of the biggest choices comes in
episode 2 of the game’s first season, you have the option to either save Harvey
Dent or save Catwoman, if you save Harvey Dent Selina will get injured And will
escape, if you save Catwoman however, Harvey Dent will become his Comic Book
alter ego, in the batman comics and tv shows, Harvey dent is the Batman villain
Two-Face and he flips a coin to make literally all his choices, in the Batman
comics Harvey Dent was scarred by acid when it was thrown at him in court by Sal
Maroni, one of Gotham’s crime Bosses, but in the game, it’s actually Penguin
who changes Harvey into Two-Face after maiming him with a stage light.
A feature
exclusive to this game is the Codex, this details the information of all the
characters in your story, it also details some of the locations that play a
part in the game like Wayne Enterprises, Arkham Asylum and Crime Alley where
Batman’s Parents were killed.
The interesting
part about the codex is the fact that it updates whenever the story progresses,
for example if a character gets killed off their codex file will update with
Deceased in brackets added to the file, their codex will remain unchanged after
their in-game death.
Also, the
in-game choices affect the codex as well, if you choose to save Selina in
Episode 2, Harvey’s Codex will change as well, this is what Harvey’s codex
looks like in episode 3.
“I wonder how Harvey would react if he knew it wasn’t just Catwoman I
saved at the debate, but Selina. He was itching to get out of that Hospital,
regardless of how much pain he’s in. Typical Harvey, showing off his smile to
ease everyone’s minds. I worry what will happen if he keeps pushing his own
problems deeper and deeper”
This was an
entry taken from Harvey’s codex file on the Batcomputer from Episode 3, because
this is the entry in the codex if you chose to save Selina.
The Cliff-hanger
in Episode 4 is also affected by your in-game choice as well, at the climax of
the episode there are 2 options, Penguin who has taken over Wayne Enterprises
by Episode 4 is hacking into Batman’s network which means he could control all
the Bat-Tech, however at the same time Two-Face is driving up to Wayne Manor
intent on hurting Bruce Wayne.
These are
the consequences of the choices
Go
to Wayne Manor: Stop
Two-Face and save Wayne Manor, locking Two-Face in Arkham Asylum, however Penguin
will succeed in smashing the Batcave’s firewall defences, Batman has no choice
but to sacrifice his Bat-Tech, Episode 5 is carried out as normal, but Batman
uses a different and must stop Lady Arkham without his Bat-Tech.
Go
to Wayne Enterprises: Batman
stops Penguin from hacking into the Batcave but at the cost of Two-Face burning
down Wayne Manor, Episode 5 is carried out with Batman using his Tech and a new
and improved Batsuit.
